PMAPS 2016 – En stor konferens i sannolikhetsmetoder inom elkraft

Publishing articles

Sociedad de Doctores e Investigadores de Colombia, SoPhIC https://www.sophicol.org/, had a webinar organised by Stiven Castaño, Lorena Novoa Aponte and Mauricio Aljure Rey and others on the 20th May 2021 about how to publish within science.

The two guests were:
José Argüello (JA), professor in chemistry and biochemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute https://www.wpi.edu/people/faculty/arguello
Oscar Quevedo-Teruel (OQT), professor in electromagnetics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology https://www.kth.se/profile/oscarqt

Here I try to summarise it. Their final pieces of advice were:

OQT:

  1. Try to do good science.
  2. Do not focus on the numbers of the journals.
  3. Have the reader in mind, so that he/she can get something from the story told in the article.

JA (agreeing with the main points of OQT, he added):

  1. Tell the whole project so that the reader get the complete picture.
  2. The most important part of the paper consists of the control groups.
  3. Tell a story (from hypothesis to results). Have in mind that the reviewer is tired.

They started by telling their experience in publishing:

JA:

There are three kinds of articles:

GoodBadUgly
OriginalImitationPoor language
Mechanical (causality)DescriptiveUnclear figures
ClearConfuseStrange formatting
Demonstrates an ideaShows how much we workLack of care

Use short sentences. More than 15 words or two lines is too much.

To choose a journal, you need to answer these questions:

  1. How good is the article?
  2. Who is the audience?
  3. How does its editing process work: time/space/costs?

OQT:

Make clear the task of every author.

The article should be easy to understand and the procedure should be reproducible.

The editors and the reviewers are hard. You have to fight for your articles. Read the comments and get something positive.

Send the article to a journal where the article is above the mean.

Questions from the audience:

  1. How to handle negative results?
    JA: Change the hypothesis.
OQT: State your limitations and disadvantages.
  2. Order of the authors.
JA: The research leader should discuss that in private.
    OQT: Avoid conflicts.
  3. How do we know that the journal is good?
OQT: From others at conferences. From the supervisor.
    JA: From the superivsor.

Welcome to share your pieces of advice!

Transformatortransport i Sverige

Transformatortransport i Norge

  1. Gör en start:
    a. Bestäm en titel.
    b. Leta ämnesord.
    c. Skriv en sammanfattning.
    d. Gör en innehållsförteckning.
  2. Fyll i styckena i innehållsförteckningen.
  3. Uppdatera det som har skrivits under punkt 1.
  4. Komplettera punkt 2.

Choice of master programme by the KTH students

It is interesting to see which master programme the civilingenjör students chose as a specialisation. An investigation at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science have presented statistics, which I have displayed like this:

masterprogram_per_civingprogram1

It is interesting to note that there are two programmes (Computer Science and Media), where the students choose mainly the same master programme as the last two specialising years of the five-year long civilingenjör programme. The two other programmes (Information Theory and Electrical Engineering) have more variation in the choice of master programme.

Another feature is the small overlap between the programmes. EE and IT share the Embedded System master.  The largest overlap is that one fourth of the IT students want to take the Computer Science master, which also receives media students. The Interactive Media Technology gets some students from CS and IT.

What is a bachelor’s degree from KTH?

It can mean three different things.

  1. An intermediate degree from a 5-year civilingenjör programme (Master of Science in Engineering).
  2. A final general degree from a 3-year teknologie kandidat programme (Bachelor).
  3. A final professional degree from a 3-year högskoleingenjör programme (Bachelor of Science in Engineering).

The structure is shown in the following figure.

Utbildningsstruktur1

The dashed lines means the intermediate degrees bachelor and licentiate within the civilingenjör and doctoral programmes. I will use the Swedish terms, as otherwise it will get confusing as the translations into English, written in parenthesis, are similar.

The civilingenjör programmes (starting with C at KTH) got an intermediate bachelor’s degree in order to follow the Bologna structure. The students are admitted to five years and the master programmes represent the specializations within the civilingenjör programmes. Foreign students enter at year 4, taking only a master programme.

Thus after three years the students have a basis in mathematics and physics (if they are in the electrical engineering programme CELTE). They have not yet taken many applied courses in electrical engineering, just tasted the different fields. The list is found at: courses in the first three years of CELTE

There are some master programmes that are designed as the specializations for the civilingenjör programme in electrical engineering (CELTE) and there are others in neighbouring areas, which the students can choose. They just choose the master programme/specialization as they are admitted to five years.

The difference between the teknologie kandidat programme and the högskoleingenjör programme is that the first requires more depth (1.5 years) in one subject whereas the second one aims more to develop engineering skills. Both kinds of programme are designed to have students ready to apply for jobs after three years.

The preceding programmes are the undergraduate ones. The graduate studies consist of four year to become a doctor. There is an intermediate degree called licentiate after two years. Some students are only admitted for the licentiate, as they only are financed for two years.

(A detailed list of the Swedish degrees can be found at UHR.)
